I love donuts. A lot. My son does too. My daughter, well, she likes to eat the tops. (Yeah) But I have not found an amazing donut in Madison, so when I heard that the newly situated Bassett Street Brunch Club served donuts, I knew I'd have to make it a field trip.
This weekend, we took the trip downtown to check it out. I wanted to get there right away in the morning and I am glad I did. They opened at 8, we got there at 8:15 and by 9:00, this place was so full and buzzing with energy.
The Bassett Street Brunch Club is located underneath the new Hampton Inn on the corner of Bassett St. and Johnson St. in downtown Madison, WI. Parking wasn't what I would call easy, but we got a spot. When we came in, we were greeted with friendly Sunday morning faces. I asked for a table by the window, which I luckily got because we came so early. At the table, the kids were each delivered a mini Etch-a-Sketch, a pleasant departure from crayons.
There were five donuts on the menu that morning and we ordered three of them: chocolate coconut, sprinkled and maple bacon, along with glasses of milk and a delicious cup of Colectivo coffee. Also, real cream! Raw sugar!
And guess what! The donuts were good! Really good! They were obviously baked that morning (a promise kept), were perfectly risen and didn't taste oily. We all agreed that the maple bacon option was the best of the three- it had a lovely subtle maple flavor and thick chunks of bacon, lardons you might say. The sprinkled was what I would expect of a sprinkled donut and the chocolate coconut was good, but I think it could be better with toasted coconut.
Overall, I was incredibly impressed and I hope to be back soon to check out the rest of the menu. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked really tasty and fresh. I like that they are serving donuts at a good price and I appreciate that the flavors are crowd-pleasers, but I would really like to see some out-of-the-box options because well, I'm a little out-of-the-box.
